Let’s Talk About Spam Comments

WordPress is excellent about filtering out 99% of the spam comments this blog gets, but once in a while, one gets through that I actually read and send to trash, myself.

What is a Spam comment?

A comment made to a blog or website with the goal of getting a link to another website, usually selling something.  That’s my definition of it, anyway.

Wikipedia says: Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising, indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media.

I did some digging into the comments received on Life64 that were automatically marked as Spam and had to laugh.  Here are some of the Spam comments that I thought were amusing in some way:

From Payday Loans: I severely enjoy your posts. Many thanks… <link to a loan service>

>> You are severely welcome.

Fromchristian louboutin high heels’: If you do find a vintage dress, to achieve a good fit, you may need to have the dress altered and this can be costly. Instead of going to the effort of finding, buying, and alteringa true vintage dress, why not try a modern day vintage style dress?…

>> What?  This is a reply to a post about Hemingway?!

From ‘louis vuitton outlet store’:  Do you yourself own the fairy bag?last year its so ugly well not much but exepert the colour and the most uglllly part is that the stamp….

>> What?!!

Terrano Spirit: you’ve got an incredible blog right here! would you prefer to make some invite posts on my blog? <link>

>> I had to go look.  It was an Indonesian site selling cars.

From Isabella: We have decided to open our POWERFUL and PRIVATE web traffic system to the public for a limited time! You can sign up for our UP SCALE network with a free trial as we get started with the public’s orders. Imagine how your bank account will look when your website gets the traffic it deserves. >>Yes, imagine how my bank account will look after you jack-holes rape it with this absurd phishing scheme.

Goodbye  (all hyperlinks removed from this comment)

>>Gosh, I wonder what they are selling.  Is it Kamagra?

From ‘Olive Soap’: Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is magnificent blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back. <link to some cosmetics web site>

>>Yes, I read your mind – your small, transparent, spamming mind.

From ‘Trust but Verify’: I’m writing to make you know what a incredible encounter my princess developed browsing your web site. She picked up such a lot of things, which included what it is like to have a marvelous helping style to let certain people with ease completely grasp chosen hard to do subject matter. You truly did more than our desires. Thanks for supplying these productive, healthy, explanatory as well as fun guidance on the topic to Lizeth.

>>The link on this one was, ironically, to a site for doing online background checks.

FromBackground Check Virgo’: I’ll right away grab your rss as I can not find your email subscription link or newsletter service. Do you’ve any? Please let me know in order that I could subscribe. Thanks.

>> Yes, I can’t wait to see what shows up in my inbox once I give you my e-mail address. Not.

From <malicious link removed>: Hey! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?  My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing months of hard work due to no backup. Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?

>> Make a backup, jack-hole. Everyone knows this.  And no, I haven’t been hacked yet, probably because I didn’t click your link.

From ‘Click to Enter’: Youre so cool! I dont suppose Ive read anything like this before. So nice to find somebody with some original thoughts on this subject. realy thank you for starting this up. this website is something that is needed on the web, someone with a little originality. useful job for bringing something new to the internet!

>> Wow.  Thanks for the generic compliment and link to a baby-sitting service.

From louis vuitton bags for sale’: Being childishly alluring could be the total antithesis to becoming an immature brat.

>> Just who are you calling, ‘Alluring’?

It goes on and on for pages, but I stopped after three.  The Internet is a quagmire of this crap.  It’s in our inboxes.  It’s in comments on our blogs.  Click the wrong link and it’s in your face.  Spam is here to stay, and no matter what, it’s in our diets, every day.
