The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, told in 20 minutes

The Old Man and the Sea is my favorite Hemingway story, and I thoroughly enjoyed this animated version, directed by Aleksandr Petrov.  The film won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 1999.

If you have not read The Old Man and the Sea, you should.  And you should read it before you watch a movie of it.  As we all know, the movie version never lives up to the book, except in the rarest of occasions.

Still, this animated version is strikingly beautiful, using pastel oil paintings on glass.  It must have been painstaking work – a labor of love.  The result gently retells Hemingway’s story.  Visually impressive, I think it is a worthwhile use of twenty minutes.  For me – it set the mood for my whole day.
